Granada Museums

At the top of the front is engraved the date of construction: 1539. This house consists of a hallway with stairs and windows from the Renaissance tradition, which is accessible to the central courtyard, with rooms open to the lower and upper galleries, and a beautiful rear garden.

The building underwent a radical transformation in order to place the museum there. In 1962 the house of the painter Rafael Latorre was purchased, which was near the house Castril, and the museum was expanded to include a space museum.

As director, Eguaras Angela Mendoza (1967-1988) made its present configuration, since the reform of 1970, ranging from prehistory to the end of the Middle Ages. In 1980 the Ethnology Section was created but has never developed, although there are reserves in superb collections of glass and ceramic Castril Fajalauza Granada.

The contents of the museum include archaeological finds from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic made in the province of Granada, as well as valuable parts from the Iberians, Phoenicians, Romans, and Arabs.

Science Park of Granada

The Science Park of Granada is the first interactive museum of science in Andalusia and one of the highlights of Spain. Since its inauguration in May 1995, the museum has grown in three phases to form the more than 26,000 square meters that make up its surface.

In November (2008) a fourth phase of expansion was inaugurated, which doubled the area of the center and its contents. The Science Park is located in the center of Granada and has become one of the main tourist attractions of the city. The park consists of a significant number of permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Fine Arts Museums in Granada

The Museum of Fine Arts in Granada is the most important art gallery in the city. After several changes of location, it is now located in the Palacio de Carlos V, a remarkable Renaissance building attached to the Alhambra

The history of the Museum of Fine Arts owes its origin to the confiscation of Mendizabal, which resulted in the dispersal of numerous works of art that belonged to religious orders.

With art collected from convents and monasteries, suppressed the Provincial Museum in the ex-Dominican Santa Cruz la Real, which opened on August 11, 1839. After going through several locations in 1923, it is now located in the Casa de Castril, in the Carrera del Darro, where they share space with the Archaeological Museum and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.

Already in the 19th century, there was a chance to recover as the Palace Museum of Charles V, which was considered the most important building in the Christian Granada.

The process was long and on October 6, 1958, during the centenary celebrations of fifth anniversary of the death of Emperor Charles V, was finally inaugurated the Museum of Fine Arts in Granada in its new location on the first floor of the Palacio de Calos V, where it’s remained ever since.

Archaeological Museum of Granada

The Archaeological Museum of Granada was founded in 1867. While until 1879 it was considered a mere Cabinet Committee under the Antiquities Monuments of Granada, the first collection was formed with funds from the Commission on Monuments, with two sections: Archaeological and Fine Arts.

In 1917  the house Castril was purchased and the museum was moved there. The house is located in the Carrera del Darro, in the old Arab quarter of Ajsaris. House Castril is one of the finest Renaissance palaces of Granada.

The museum underwent a reform that was recently in January 2008. It is currently managed by the Ministry of Culture of the Junta de Andalucia.

The museum’s collections are mainly paintings and sculptures from the 15th through the 20th century. Larger funds come from foundations and wealthy religious properties in the 19th century.

Works have been added and subsequently deposited by the Prado Museum, as well as shopping, both recent examples of art and old masters. Among the oldest pieces is a replica of the sculpture of Santa Maria de la Alhambra, Gate of the presiding justice of the Alhambra.

Museo de la Alhambra

The Museum of the Alhambra is one of the monuments of the Alhambra and Generalife. It is located in the Palacio de Carlos V. The museum was built in 1870 to guard the numerous archaeological evidence collected by the Provincial Commission of Monuments.

In 1962 it was renamed the National Museum of Hispanic-Muslim Art. On exhibit in the museum are objects related to the Alhambra that date back to the 19th century.

The collections revolve around civilization and are distributed in the following thematic rooms: Faith; Science and Economics; Arts and Califal Amiral; Art Califal Nazari; Nazari Art: Public buildings; Nazari Art: The Alhambra and the Palladian architecture; and finally, Nazari Art: the Alhambra and the material culture.
