Granada Plants & Wildlife

Other species found are the rose, Mediterranean and Japanese shrubs, the oleander, the evergreen, bay leaves, bitter orange, and the ivy.

To preserve this biological richness the seeds are stored in a germplasm bank to collect and preserve biological material. Both initiatives will be undertaken in collaboration with the University of Cordoba.

It is anticipated that the center begins operating in 2009 and will collect seeds from historic places, including the Generalife and the gardens of the Darro and Genil rivers. For the realization of this project, the board will receive the cooperation of the Bank of Plant Germplasm in Andaluz, the Department for Environment of the Junta de Andalucia, and the Botanical Gardens of Cordoba.

Animals

The wildlife of Grenada is the most significant. Its habitat is in the area of the Alhambra and the Generalife, which has created over time an artificial ecosystem that fosters the life of an important variety of wildlife through the woods.

Using voids and holes in the walls, the rooms are dark and gloomy, and there is a multitude of fountains, ponds, and tanks that are in the area.

Due to the extensive gardens and forests, a lot of different birds, both domestic and migratory, inhabit the area and eat the abundance of insects.

The best known are: swifts, swallows, sparrows, doves (common in Turkey), wood pigeons, and heron. There are also raptors, such as the common kestrel or sparrow hawk, that live in the areas of Llano Perdiz and Silla del Moro.

Flora

The main urban green areas are the deciduous gardens of the Alhambra and the Generalife gardens, the Federico Garcia Lorca Park, and the Botanical Garden, which was recently restored.

In Carmena some of the best gardens are Carmen Cipreses, Acosta, of Our Lady of Sorrows, and the Manuel de Falla.

In the gardens and forests, there live some 300 species and hybrids, more than 90 families, and more than 210 genera, dominated by the myrtle and boxwood, which are used in forming hedges and cypress, employee walls, and sculptures.

You can also see kites, goshawks, and eagles in the area. Also, nocturnal birds of prey, such as the Tawny Owl, are very common.

Some animals include weasels, dormice, squirrels, hares, and rabbits. The area also has wild boars, foxes, and wild goats. In the ponds and lakes you will find golden carp, common carp, and mirror carp, which coexist with frogs and toads, two other abundant species in the ponds.

Among the reptiles are the lizard and snake ladder, horseshoe, and a bastard, rounding out the many species of invertebrates.
