The shield is edged with a gold ribbon and bears the motto of the city—“Very noble, very loyal, appointed, large, famous and heroic city of Granada”—and the bottom is finished with a gold tassel. It rings with the royal crown.

As of 2008 Granada has with 236,998 inhabitants, and as the table shows demographics of the past 100 years, the population in Grenada has dropped significantly, mainly due to the relocation of young couples to the metropolitan area, where house prices are more affordable and where there are better job prospects.

The population of the city is very old, and the decline in population may be even more pronounced in coming years. In 2007 there were 13,323 registered foreigners, and the Moroccans were the largest group, with a percentage of 21.98%.
